The film version of A Walk to Remember has been updated from the 1950s to be set in the 1990s. So because he doesn’t start from rock bottom, I don’t really believe his redemption. They keep mentioning that he is a bad boy, but the worst thing he does (aside from his nasty inner monologue) is sneak out of his house to eat peanuts in a graveyard. While A Walk to Remember is a decent novel to read, it lacks substance because I feel disconnected from the character of Landon. And while he is happy to dish out criticism on Jamie, who is incredible generous and sweet to him, he has nothing bad to say about his ‘friends’ who ridicule him and Jamie throughout most of the novel. Landon has very few redeeming qualities – he acts incredible ungrateful for all the great things he has in his life and is very quick to pass judgement on others based on their appearance or traits he finds annoying. For example, Landon has refused to go out with a girl that he likes, and has a lot in common with, because she has a glass eye. His descriptions of people are very condescending and judgemental, and his thoughts are often nasty.

Landon reluctantly agrees to play the role as he feels that he owes Jamie a favour after she attended a dance with him and winded up helping him carry his drunk, vomit covered Jamie was cast as the role of the angel, and asked Landon to play the lead role of the father because she wanted the play to be extra special that year. The play was written by Jamie’s father, and is a thinly veiled biography about his wife who had died during childbirth, combined with a Christmas Carol style of magic. The majority of A Walk to Remember focuses on the community play, in which Landon and Jamie play key roles.

The story takes place in North Carolina, in a community which centres around the local church. A Walk to Remember is set in the 1950s and follows the story of Landon Carter, a young and ‘rebellious’ teenager (50s style rebellion) and Jamie Sullivan, the preachers daughter who is kind and compassionate, as they begin to form a relationship despite their many differences.

Today I’ll be looking at the 1999 novel A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks and its film adaptation A Walk to Remember directed by Adam Shankman and starring Mandy Moore released in 2002.Īnyone familiar with the works of Nicholas Sparks will know what to expect from this story – love, redemption, tension and two unlikely characters coming together.
